Baby wearing has many benefits. It supports bonding, reduces crying, and colic. Baby wearing provides the womb environment the baby is accustomed to. Mother and baby are in synch. The baby is able to hear the mother's heart beat just as she did while in the womb. It creates oneness and security. Baby wearing also is helpful to mothers. It allows her to be hands free while carrying the baby so things such as housework can be done. When the mother is out of the home people passing will be less likely to touch her baby.
Baby wearing is also great for potty training. Most Afrikan mothers on the continent do not use diapers on their babies. They monitor the baby's movements and gestures while wearing them. They then hold the baby over the place chosen for elimination. Across Afrika, women can be seen carrying sleeping or sometimes giggly babies on their backs, swathed in cloth. The babies move to the sway of their mother's hips, synchronized throughout the day, bending with them as they collect water or sweep the floor and rising again when the women stop to rest.15
Baby wearing is also a great tool for daycare providers. Many small babies lay in bassinets most of the time in daycare. Babies need constant touch and love. Daycare providers should consider using slings and/or wraps for the children in their care. Mothers using daycare services can ask their provider if they can use a carrier. The art of baby wearing is essential for the traditional Afrikan baby - sitter. Bringing Afrikan traditional values to the Western daycare system can provide a balance. |
